Overview

About Springday

Springday is a corporate wellbeing platform offering customizable solutions to help organizations support, inspire, and educate their employees on health and wellness. It provides a range of tools and resources tailored to organizational needs, promoting a happier and healthier workforce.

My Role

As the lead UX researcher and designer, I collaborated with two designers over six months to revamp the app's architecture and visuals using design thinking methodologies. I conducted user interviews, usability testing, and prototyping while working closely with UI designers to refine the design through multiple iterations.

The Problem

The original Springday app featured an overcrowded Home Screen and a limited hamburger menu, resulting in cluttered and overwhelming navigation.

Design Challenge

Redesign the app’s navigation system and architecture to create a more engaging, intuitive, and user-centered experience.

My Process

User Research

  • Methods: Conducted user interviews, card sorting exercises, and usability testing.

  • Findings:

    • Users viewed wellbeing as a balance of personal, social, and group experiences.

    • Participants expected separate spaces for personal and team wellbeing features, with a Home Screen providing a quick snapshot of both.

    • Users found tasks overwhelming, struggled with navigation, and were confused by wellbeing features.

    • The app’s social aspects were valued, but users desired clearer guidance and simpler navigation.

Redefining the Design Challenge

Based on research insights, the focus shifted to overhauling the navigation system and app architecture to align with users' mental models and expectations.

Desktop Research

Explored wayfinding principles to enhance user navigation and screen transitions, ensuring users always knew their current location, how they arrived there, and possible next steps.

Wayfinding Principles

Prototyping

  • Low-Fidelity Prototypes: Developed three prototypes featuring different navigation styles, including a hamburger menu approach.

  • A/B Testing: Tested these prototypes to gather feedback on usability and navigation preferences.

  • Site Map Development: Created a site map informed by user feedback to structure content logically.

  • High-Fidelity Prototype: Designed a detailed prototype incorporating user feedback and the new site map.

  • User Testing: Conducted further testing to validate design changes, ensuring the new navigation and architecture met user needs.

Outcomes

Business Impact

  • Enhanced User Engagement: The intuitive and personalized design increased user activity and engagement.

  • Increased Adoption & Retention: Improved navigation and usability led to higher adoption rates and sustained app usage.

  • Higher Participation in Wellbeing Programs: Simplified access to programs resulted in greater employee involvement.

  • Reduced Customer Support Costs: A clearer, more structured app experience minimized user confusion and support requests.

Personal Learnings

  • Collaborative Iteration: Working closely with UI designers highlighted the value of combining diverse expertise to refine designs effectively.

  • User-Centered Design: Continuous user feedback was crucial in shaping a product that genuinely meets user needs and expectations.

  • Importance of Clear Navigation: Reinforced that intuitive navigation is key to user satisfaction and engagement in app design.
